Why My Approach to Physiotherapy Is Unconventional: A Neuro-Based Perspective
When most people think of physiotherapy, they picture exercises, stretches, and hands-on treatment to target pain and mobility issues. While these are essential tools, my approach goes deeper—right to the source of movement, pain, and recovery: your brain and nervous system.
Beyond Muscles and Joints: The Role of the Nervous System in Healing
Traditional physiotherapy often focuses on muscles, joints, and tissues. While these are important, they don’t tell the whole story. Your nervous system—made up of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves—controls everything from how you move to how you experience pain. If we only look at muscles without considering how the brain is communicating with them, we might miss the real reason behind your symptoms.
That’s why I take a functional neurology approach—assessing different parts of the brain and nervous system to see where there may be imbalances, weaknesses, or miscommunications that are affecting your movement and pain.
What Makes This Approach Different?
Instead of just asking, Where does it hurt? I ask:
🔎 What’s happening in your brain and nervous system that’s contributing to this?
🔎 Which neural pathways are working well—and which need support?
🔎 How is your body interpreting movement, balance, and pain signals?
Through specific neurological assessments (these are often strange but fun for people to experience), we'll test different brain areas, including the cerebellum (which controls coordination and balance), the vestibular system (your sense of balance and spatial awareness), proprioception (your brain’s ability to perceive where your body is in space), and more.
A Client’s Experience: Seeing the Whole Picture
One of my clients recently told me:
"I love coming to see you because I feel like you're actually trying to figure out what's going on in my body through your assessments. I always learn something new about myself which is really cool. I've never had that experience before with a physio."
That’s because, rather than just treating the site of pain, I look for the root cause—which might be a miscommunication in the nervous system rather than a simple muscle issue.
What This Means for Your Recovery
By incorporating brain-based techniques, nervous system regulation, and functional neurology principles, I help clients achieve:
✅ Faster, longer-lasting relief by addressing underlying neurological dysfunction
✅ More effective movement patterns by retraining the brain-body connection
✅ Better balance and coordination through neuro-based rehab techniques
✅ Reduced chronic pain by calming an overactive nervous system
And this approach isn’t just for physiotherapy—I also bring somatic nervous system regulation drills into my coaching work. These drills help clients rewire stress responses, improve resilience, and support emotional well-being by working directly with the body’s physiological reactions.
A Whole-Body, Brain-Based Approach to Healing
If you’ve been struggling with pain, mobility issues, or unexplained movement dysfunction, and traditional approaches haven’t worked, it’s time to look at the bigger picture. By integrating the brain, nervous system, and body, we can create lasting change—whether in physical rehabilitation or personal development.
